Priester’s Pecans is one of Alabama’s most famous family-owned food companies. The business began in 1935 in the small town of Fort Deposit, Alabama, when a Texaco station owner named Lee C. (L.C.) Priester started selling pecans to travelers passing through town.
The company’s success started with a simple customer request. A traveling salesman asked L.C. Priester if he could crack and shell some pecans for him. Priester agreed, hired local women to help shell pecans, and soon orders began arriving from all over the region. That single request became the foundation of the company.
One of the most famous parts of the story is a handshake partnership. Priester’s friend, Hense Reynolds Ellis, provided financial backing and became a partner with a loan of just $200. The Ellis family eventually took over the business and continues to operate it today as a multi-generation family company.
