🧀 The Story of Cheese in Wisconsin

Cheese making in Wisconsin started in the 1800s, when European immigrants (especially from Germany and Switzerland) brought dairy farming skills to the region. Wisconsin had perfect conditions—rich grass, lots of farms, and cool weather—so farmers began turning extra milk into cheese to preserve it.

By the early 1900s, Wisconsin became the #1 cheese-producing state in the U.S., and it still is today. Over time, it became known as “America’s Dairyland”, famous for:

• 🧀 Brick and Colby cheese
• 🧀 Fresh cheese curds (the squeaky snack)

Cheese curds especially became a Wisconsin favorite because they were fresh, local, and eaten quickly after production—often within a day for the best taste and “squeak.”
