The story of Krispy Kreme begins in 1937 in Winston-Salem. A young businessman, Vernon Rudolph, bought a secret yeast-raised doughnut recipe from a French chef in New Orleans and rented a building to make and sell doughnuts to local grocery stores.

What made the company famous was actually an accident. As the doughnuts cooked, the sweet aroma drifted into the streets. People walking by began asking if they could buy the hot doughnuts directly from the bakery. Rudolph responded by cutting a hole in the wall of the building and selling fresh doughnuts right from the sidewalk. That simple idea helped create the company’s first retail business.

Today, Krispy Kreme operates in more than 30 countries with roughly 1,400 locations worldwide, but its identity is still tied to that original Winston-Salem bakery and the famous “Hot Now” experience that started when people followed the smell of fresh down the street.
