The Story of Key West Key Lime Pie Co.

The company now known as Key West Key Lime Pie Co. traces its roots to one of the original Key lime pie businesses in the Florida Keys. According to the company, it began in the 1980s and has changed ownership only a few times over more than 40 years. The original Rowe family became known in Key West for making and even delivering Key lime pies by bicycle. The company still uses a family recipe that it says dates back roughly 100 years and continues to make pies by hand in Key West.

The traditional Florida story says the pie was created in Key West in the late 1800s by a cook known as Aunt Sally, who worked for wealthy Key West resident William Curry. This story has been passed down for generations and remains popular in the Key

The pie became popular because Key limes grew abundantly in the Keys. These limes are smaller, more aromatic, and more tart than ordinary Persian limes. Sailors, fishermen, and island families could make the dessert with ingredients that stored well in the tropical climate.
