Grippo’s Bar-B-Q Potato Chips are one of the most famous regional snack foods in the Midwest, especially in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. The company behind them is Grippo’s Snack Foods, a family-owned business that has been operating for more than a century.

How Grippo’s Started

Grippo’s was founded in 1919 by Angelo Grippo in Cincinnati, Ohio. The company originally made rolled sugar cones for ice cream shops before expanding into pretzels. In 1930, Angelo invented the distinctive “loop pretzel,” which became one of the company’s early successes.  Grippo’s didn’t start making potato chips until 1959. After moving into a larger facility on Colerain Avenue in Cincinnati, the company added potato chips to its lineup. Soon afterward, the now-famous Bar-B-Q flavor was introduced and became the brand’s signature product.
