Mikado is a popular snack in France consisting of thin biscuit sticks coated in chocolate. The product was introduced by LU and became well known for its simple combination of crunchy biscuit and smooth chocolate. Although similar to Japan’s Pocky, Mikado became a favorite snack in France and other European countries because of its light texture and easy-to-share design. Over the years, the brand has expanded to include different chocolate varieties and limited-edition flavors.

LU stands for Lefèvre-Utile, named after founders Jean-Romain Lefèvre and Pauline Utile, who opened a bakery in Nantes, France, in 1846. The company began as a small family bakery and grew into one of France’s most famous biscuit makers. Its initials, “LU,” became the brand name and are now recognized throughout Europe.

LU became famous for creating iconic biscuits such as Petit Beurre, Mikado, Prince de LU, and Pim’s. In 1982, LU partnered with the Japanese company Glico to introduce Mikado, the European version of Pocky, which quickly became a hit in France.
