The Story of Doritos

Doritos is one of the most successful and recognizable snack brands in the world, known for its bold flavors, distinctive triangular shape, and innovative marketing. The story of Doritos began in Southern California during the early 1960s and has since evolved into a global success story that transformed the snack food industry.

The origins of Doritos can be traced back to Disneyland in Anaheim, California. At the time, a restaurant called Casa de Fritos operated within the park and served Mexican-inspired foods. Employees discovered that leftover tortillas from the kitchen could be cut into triangles, fried, and seasoned to create a crispy snack. Visitors enjoyed the chips, and their popularity quickly attracted attention.

One of the executives from Frito-Lay, Arch West, recognized the potential of these tortilla chips. Inspired by what he saw at Disneyland, he worked with his company to develop a packaged version for the broader market. In 1964, Frito-Lay introduced Doritos, making them the first tortilla chips to be distributed nationally in the United States.

The name “Doritos” comes from the Spanish word “doradito,” which means “little golden things.
