Apple Strudel is a famous pastry that originated in the former Austrian Empire. Its roots can be traced back to the 17th century, influenced by thin layered pastries brought to Central Europe through trade routes and the Ottoman Empire. The oldest known handwritten apple strudel recipe dates to 1697 and is preserved in Vienna. Over time, Apple Strudel became one of Austria’s most famous desserts and spread throughout Germany, Hungary, and other parts of Europe.

Simple Apple Strudel Recipe

Ingredients

  • 6 apples, peeled and sliced
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1 package phyllo dough or strudel dough
  • 4 tablespoons melted butter
  • Powdered sugar for topping

Directions

  1. Mix apples, sugar, cinnamon, and raisins in a bowl.
  2. Lay out the dough and brush with melted butter.
  3. Spread the apple mixture along one edge.
  4. Roll the dough carefully around the filling.
  5. Place on a baking sheet and brush the top with butter.
  6. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 35–40 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Let cool slightly and dust with powdered sugar before serving.
